About Rukmini Arts & Music Trust
RUKMINI ARTS & MUSIC TRUST was started by Mr N. Viswanathan in the year 1996 and its first anniversary was celebrated in the presence of Sangita Kalanidhi Sri Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer on 5th September 1997. This is a self financing Trust, created in the name of Mr Viswanathan’s wife(late) Mrs Rukmini Viswanathan, who passed away in the year 1993.Rukmini Viswanathan was deeply interested in Carnatic Music both as a performing artist of Radio Srilanka and also as a co - organiser of chamber music concerts in Calcutta and Bombay with Mr N Viswanathan.She taught Music to her children and her grandchildren. This trust was managed by Mr N.Viswanathan himself along with his daughter Mrs Aruna Prabha Ranganathan, Carnatic Musician, both acting as Trustees without any external resources or funds except that of the family funds. After the passing away of Mr Viswanathan in the year 2021, this Trust is managed by Mr Rajan Ranganathan alongwith Mrs Aruna Prabha Ranganathan. The day-to - day activities of this Trust are managed by Mr A. Balachander and Mrs Latha Murali. This trust holds anniversary function every year and conducts monthly music concerts at the residence located at Kalakshetra Colony, Besant Nagar.
This trust has conducted more than 300 concerts , mostly as a Chamber concert at the residence as well in halls hired for this purpose.Artists from very senior Vidwans and Vidushis, young artists and upcoming musicians have performed in our Trust to a dedicated audience of music lovers. Rukmini Arts have honoured several Musicians, instrumentalists, Gurus, Musicologists, music critics, Sabha Secretaries, for their contribution to the Music world. Rukmini Arts other activities includes :
- To promote Indian classical music, particularly Carnatic Music by providing a platform in the form of Chamber concerts to various vocal and instrumental artists.
- To arrange annual gatherings to honour selected elders in the field of Carnatic Music and to publicly express our private appreciation of their great contributions.
- To institute awards in a limited manner for music competitions in different sabhas.
- To assist through donations to various music sabhas to arrange concerts.
- Sponsoring concerts of young artists in various sabhas.
- Donations to select number of Music Sabhas every year.
- Honouring and recognizing some of the well known personalities in the Music world
- Awarding prizes and endowments to few sabhas
- Giving scholarship to the needy
- Providing help to elderly Musicians and others connected to the music world, to bring out their work as publications and providing medical assistance.
- Sponsoring the whole youth series conducted in various sabhas during Music season to promote young and upcoming artists.
